Hi everyone !

In the precedent article of the piercing category, we talked about a trend, The ear constellation. It’s one of the best way social media influenced the art of piercing. Now, we’re gonna talk about one of the worst way social media influenced the piercing « world ».

I named… The piercing challenge ! The idea here is quite simple. Everybody know that there’s Filter on snap chat. Well, here, it’s the filter that decide what piercing you’re gonna have. The filter move randomly between different type of piercing and will stop on one pattern.

It’s a basic challenge like there’s many others, many people would not see the appeal in this idea, but it became a real trend on social media.

Now, I wouldn’t say it’s bad if it was done according to the rules of safety, and a processus who make sure that you’ll stay in good health. The problem here, is that a huge amount of people decided to do it themself, while it should rightfully be done by a professional. Puncturing your skin comes down to get a foreign object in a part of your body, and like we all know, it can cause an infection if not done properly.

A dangerous practice therefore, when we know that common people don’t dispose of the right equipment and that what they use isn’t sterilized and so, isn’t bacteria free.

However, people don’t seem to mind, if we go by the numerous videos available on Tik Tok, the social media where it all begun, even though a majority of article tend to say that it’s not safe and it shouldn’t be done.

This is a perfect exemple of the abuse generate by social media. Sometimes,

people create challenge to help a noble cause, and other time, they create challenge just to prove that they can do it, to demonstrate « who can go the furthest », even if it can cost them their health.

And it’s way more tragic when the community of this media is so young. On Tik Tok a huge part of the community is composed of teens, they’re more impressionable and easily influenced.

As we can see every day, social media aren’t just unicorn and rainbow and can have a real bad influence !

See you next time,

Laëtitia.
