Now, I would like to talk about the way social media influenced our way of seeing ourself, to understand how it helped body painting express all it’s meaning.
To begin with, social media didn’t have a really positive effect on people and on the body image. Because very soon appeared a culture of perfect « Beauty » and perfect happiness. All of it dictated by the standards of the society we lived in. And if you didn’t fit in this standards, then people would tell you that you weren’t good enough. Especially on social media when people tend to be more ruthless. Words can hurt, and it’s even easier when the people who say them feel untouchable, protected by anonymity.

Soon, all we could see was perfect body of perfect person, living the perfect life. Then, It began to change slowly, some people would create social media account just to mock those perfect image. Like the instagram account of Celeste Barber. That’s where the body painting got all it’s meaning. In various case, it became a symbol of resistance. It’s a way to tell something. whether it be to advocate the self esteem, the beauty diversity or to stand up and fight in a pacific way against what doesn’t feel right for you.

It’s the case for Fela Anikulapo Kuti, an artist of the 20’s century. He used is art, especially is tribal painting to contest the moral and political authorities of is country. We can ask ourself, would the result be any different if he had the opportunity to use social media back in this day ? Obviously, I think people would have heard him louder, but understanding the message behind the painting is another story. At the end of the day, social media is just a tool. What change is the person who use them.
